Professor Joris Thybaut’s Delegation from Ghent University Visits College of Chemical Engineering for Academic Exchanges and Cooperative Discussions

On May 29, a delegation led by Professor Joris Thybaut from Ghent University, Belgium, visit College of Chemical Engineering, Beijing University of Chemical Technology. A series of activities including academic lectures, educational cooperation seminars and laboratory tours were arranged.

The academic lecture session kicked off in Room A203 of the Engineering Building in the morning, hold by Professor Sun Baochang, Vice Dean of the College. Faculty members as well as doctoral and master’s students of the College attended the event. During the session, Professor Joris Thybaut delivered a lecture titled Reaction and Reactor Engineering Intricacies in Bio-Gas Upgradation, elaborating thoroughly on reaction and reactor engineering challenges encountered in biogas upgrading. Associate Professor Ouyang Yi presented Process Intensification of CO Capture by HiGee Vortex Technology, introducing cutting-edge research advances of high-gravity vortex technology for intensified carbon dioxide capture. Dr. César Pernalete Piña shared the report HyProM: a Fundamental Kinetic Model for Industrial Scale Hydroprocesses, showcasing latest achievements on the construction and application of fundamental kinetic models for industrial hydrogenation processes. The three lectures featured substantial content and highly forward-looking research perspectives, creating a strong academic atmosphere. Teachers and students present held in-depth discussions with the visiting experts on relevant research topics.

In the afternoon, the BUCT-Ghent University Educational Cooperation Seminar was held at the School of Chemical Engineering, also hosted by Professor Sun Baochang. Professor Sun extended a warm welcome to the Ghent University delegation and introduced all participants from both sides. Feng Jianghong, Deputy Director of the International Exchange and Cooperation Office, gave an overview of the university’s development and global partnerships, with special focus on the construction of its international talent training system and fruitful outcomes of international exchanges and collaborations.

Thereafter, Professor Joris Thybaut illustrated the undergraduate and postgraduate training systems of chemical engineering at Ghent University, as well as the university’s experience and distinctive practices in international talent cultivation. Associate Professor Ouyang Yi provided a detailed update on the progress of the Joint Bachelor-Master Program jointly carried out by the two institutions. In the discussion segment, both parties engaged in thorough talks covering joint student training, faculty exchanges, joint scientific research and international research project applications.

Following the seminar, Professor Joris Thybaut and his entourage visited the Ministry of Education Research Center for Hypergravity Engineering. They gained an in-depth understanding of the School’s research platform development, technological innovations and industry-university-research cooperation achievements in process intensification, high-gravity technology and related fields.

In recent years, the College of Chemical Engineering has consistently pushed forward internationalized education and actively expanded exchange partnerships with world-class universities worldwide. This visit by scholars from Ghent University has greatly enhanced mutual understanding and trust, laying a solid foundation for deeper cooperation between the two universities in talent training, scientific research and global academic exchanges.
